Description

Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ is a vibrant, compact variety of the Peruvian Lily known for its striking pink and yellow blooms. This stunning perennial adds long-lasting colour to garden borders or containers, while also being a great choice for cut flowers. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to plant and care for Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ to ensure it thrives in your garden.

PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time

The ideal time to plant Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ is during spring, as the soil starts to warm up. This timing allows the plant’s roots to establish before the growing season, promoting healthy and vigorous growth. Planting in early autumn is also an option, giving the plant time to settle before dormancy, ensuring stronger growth in the following spring.

Site Selection
  • Sunlight: Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ prefers a location that receives full sunlight. Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sun each day to encourage lush growth and plentiful blooms.
  • Soil: It thrives in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. This plant doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions, so ensure the soil drains well to avoid root rot. Consider improving the soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure to enhance both fertility and drainage.
Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but only as deep as the plant’s container. This allows Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ to spread its roots comfortably.
  2. Soil Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost or organic material to improve structure and provide essential nutrients for your Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’.
  3. Planting: Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Fill in the hole and gently firm the soil around the plant.
  4. Watering After Planting: Water thoroughly after planting Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ to settle the soil around the roots and promote good establishment.
Watering Requirements
  • During Growth: Water Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ regularly during the growing season, particularly during dry spells. Ensure the soil dries slightly between watering to prevent over-saturation.
  • Dormant Season: Reduce watering in the dormant period, allowing the plant to rest. However, ensure the soil doesn’t dry out completely during prolonged dry weather.
Feeding
  • Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to give Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ a strong start. This will encourage healthy growth and vibrant flowering.
  • Mid-Summer: Feed again in mid-summer to maintain flowering and keep the plant vigorous through the rest of the season.
Pruning and Deadheading
  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and keep Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ looking tidy throughout the season.
  • Cutting Back: In late autumn, after flowering has finished, cut the stems back to ground level. This will prepare the plant for the dormant season and promote new growth in the spring.
Mulching
  • Spring Mulch: Add a layer of mulch around the base of your Alstroemeria in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Use organic mulch, such as bark chips or compost, for best results.
  • Winter Protection: Mulching during the winter months helps to protect the roots from cold temperatures, ensuring the plant survives harsh weather conditions.
Supporting the Plant

Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ has a sturdy growth habit and typically doesn’t require staking. However, in exposed areas with strong winds, you may want to provide light support to prevent damage.

Final Tips

Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ is a low-maintenance perennial that rewards gardeners with months of vibrant flowers from late spring through autumn. By planting it in well-drained soil and providing full sunlight, you can enjoy its beautiful, long-lasting blooms. It’s perfect for borders, containers, or as a cut flower, bringing joy to both your garden and home. With a little care and attention, this Alstroemeria will continue to brighten up your garden year after year.
