Follow this comprehensive planting and aftercare guide to ensure your Angelica gigas thrives and blooms beautifully.
PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
- Spring: The best time to plant Angelica gigas is in early spring. This allows the plant to establish its roots before the blooming season, ensuring a strong and healthy plant. Planting in spring also gives the plant time to grow during the warmer months, resulting in a more robust and larger flower display.
- Autumn: While spring is ideal, you can also plant Angelica gigas in early autumn. This allows the plant to settle before the colder weather and gives it a good start for the following growing season.
Site Selection
- Sunlight: Angelica gigas thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Choose a location that receives direct sunlight for most of the day to encourage strong growth and abundant flowers. The plant’s architectural form will shine when placed in a prominent position where it can be admired.
- Soil: Angelica gigas prefers moist, well-drained soil. It benefits from soil that is rich in organic matter, so consider incorporating compost or organic matter to improve soil quality. Avoid planting in areas where water tends to stagnate, as this can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil drains well, especially in the winter months.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole that is at least twice the width and depth of the root ball. This gives Angelica gigas plenty of space for its roots to spread and establish.
- Soil Preparation: Mix plenty of compost or organic material into the soil to improve fertility and drainage. The rich soil helps Angelica gigas develop its impressive foliage and flowers.
- Planting: Place the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets and provide stability.
- Watering After Planting: Water the plant thoroughly after planting. This helps settle the soil around the roots and ensures proper establishment. Be sure the soil drains well to avoid waterlogging.
Watering Requirements
- Growing Season: During the growing season, Angelica gigas requires consistent moisture, especially in dry periods. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out completely, as this can stress the plant.
- Dormant Season: In the dormant season, reduce watering significantly. Angelica gigas is relatively hardy, but it’s essential to avoid overwatering during the winter months. Water only if the soil becomes excessively dry.
Feeding
- Spring: In early spring, feed Angelica gigas with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. This provides the plant with the nutrients it needs to establish itself and produce lush, healthy foliage.
- Mid-Summer: A light feeding in mid-summer can help encourage strong flowering and ensure the plant maintains vigour throughout its blooming season. Be sure not to overfeed, as this can cause excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Pruning
- Deadheading: Regular deadheading of spent flowers is essential for promoting the production of new blooms. This practice keeps the plant looking tidy and can prolong the flowering period.
- Autumn Pruning: After the flowering season ends, cut back the plant to ground level. This will prepare Angelica gigas for winter dormancy and promote strong growth in the following year.
Mulching
- Spring: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of Angelica gigas in the spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Organic mulch like compost or bark chips works well.
- Winter: In colder months, apply a thicker layer of mulch to protect the roots from frost and to prevent the plant from freezing. This also helps maintain soil moisture during dry spells.
Supporting the Plant
- Staking: While Angelica gigas has strong stems, its large, dome-shaped flowers can make it top-heavy, especially during windy weather. Consider staking the plant to provide extra support. Use a tall stake or support ring to help maintain its upright structure.

Angelica gigas is a striking, architectural perennial that makes a dramatic statement in any garden. Nothing is showing but it’s January so only to be expected. In the past bought plants which were dormant from Protors and they always performed well. I am so so imperssed by Proctors. They are my go-to nursery now, plants are alwasy strong and healthy, arrive packaged well. If you live close to Proctors you are so lucky. It’s miles better than any garden ceentre I’ve even been to.
