PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
  • Spring: Plant your Delphinium in spring, giving the roots time to settle before the first flush of blooms.
  • Autumn: Alternatively, planting in early autumn allows the plant to establish before its next growing season.
Site Selection
  • Sunlight: Choose a bright location, as Delphinium thrives in full sun for the best flower production.
  • Soil: The plant prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Incorporating compost or organic matter at planting will give your delphinium a strong start.
Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper.
  2. Soil Preparation: Mix in compost to enrich the soil and improve drainage.
  3. Positioning: Place your Delphinium with the crown level to the soil surface.
  4. Backfill and Water: Firmly backfill and water well to encourage root establishment.
Watering Requirements
  • During the growing season, water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist, particularly in dry spells.
  • Avoid overwatering, as Delphinium dislikes waterlogging.
Feeding
  • Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser to encourage vigorous new shoots.
  • Summer: A light feed during mid-summer can prolong the flowering period and keep plants strong.
Pruning
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage repeat blooming. This keeps Delphinium x cultorum ‘Magic Fountains Dark Blue / White Bee’ neat and prolongs its floral display.
  • Cutting Back: After flowering ends in late summer, cut stems back to ground level to prepare for dormancy.
Mulching
  • In spring, apply organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture, improve soil, and deter weeds.
  • A protective mulch in winter helps safeguard roots, ensuring your Delphinium returns year after year.
Supporting the Plant

Although compact, stems can benefit from light staking in exposed spots. This prevents wind damage and ensures flower spikes remain upright and showy.

Lovely plant, healthy and strong . Although a little disappointed as not a impressive as usual. 5 * because I realise it late in the season and that probably has more to do with it than the plant which will be phenomenal next year.

Strong, sturdy plants arrived very quickly and were extremely well packed and supported in the box. My only comment is that they weren’t all labelled but this is only a minor disappointment. I am so much looking forward to seeing them in flower.
