Description
Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ is a stunning compact variety of hollyhock, celebrated for its elegant white blooms and dwarf habit. Perfect for smaller spaces or container gardening, this plant adds beauty to borders, patios, and cottage gardens. With proper care, this Alcea will reward you with a beautiful display throughout the flowering season. Here’s a detailed guide on how to plant and care for this lovely perennial.
Best Time to Plant
- Spring: The ideal time to plant Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ is in the spring, once the risk of frost has passed. The warming soil conditions will encourage the roots to establish quickly, setting the stage for a healthy flowering season.
- Autumn: Alternatively, plant in early autumn. This will allow your Alcea to settle before entering its winter dormancy, giving it a head start for vigorous growth in the following spring.
Selecting the Right Location
- Sunlight: Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ thrives in full sun. It needs at least 6 hours of sunlight daily to ensure robust growth and abundant blooms.
- Soil: Choose a site with well-draining soil. Alcea prefers moderately fertile soil, and drainage is key to preventing root rot. If your soil is heavy, mix in compost or sand to improve its structure.
Planting Instructions
- Preparing the Ground: Dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball. This extra space allows the roots of the plant to expand and develop a strong foundation.
- Soil Enrichment: Before planting, incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to boost fertility. Your Alcea will thrive in nutrient-rich environments.
- Planting: Place the plant into the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill in around the root ball, firming the soil gently to eliminate air pockets.
- Watering: Water Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and encourage root establishment.
Watering Guidelines
- During Growth: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. While Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ can tolerate some drought, consistent watering will promote healthier blooms. However, avoid waterlogging, as this can damage the roots.
- Dormant Period: In winter, when your Alcea goes dormant, reduce watering significantly. Only water if the soil becomes very dry.
Fertilising
- Early Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser at the start of the growing season. This will give Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ the nutrients needed for strong growth and flower production.
- Mid-Summer: For continued flowering, apply a light feed during mid-summer to encourage more blooms.
Pruning and Maintenance
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers from Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’. Deadheading encourages more blooms and helps keep the plant looking neat throughout the season.
- End of Season Pruning: After the final flowers fade in autumn, cut Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ back to ground level. This prepares the plant for winter dormancy and will promote healthy growth in the next season.
Mulching
- Spring Mulch: Add organic mulch like compost or bark chips around the base of the plant in spring. This helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
- Winter Mulch: In colder months, apply a layer of mulch to protect the plant’s roots from frost. This will ensure your Alcea survives harsh winter conditions.
Supporting the Plant
Although Alcea rosea ‘Spring Celebrities White’ has a compact growth habit, it may need staking in exposed areas to prevent wind damage. Staking helps maintain an upright growth and protects the plant from being knocked over.

Nice healthy-looking plants, well-packed. I am annoyed with myself, though, because I had MISSED that these are dwarf hollyhocks until I unpacked them. The pics were so good I didn’t think to check. I adore holloyhocks, but dislike dwarf plants. I’ve planted them, as the pics are lovely and the plants look good. We’ll see. I would have preferred really tall bonny ones.
