PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
  • Spring: Plant Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ in spring when the soil is workable and beginning to warm, helping roots establish before active growth.
  • Early Autumn: Early autumn planting also allows time to settle before dormancy and establish a strong root system.
Site Selection
  • Sunlight: Choose a position in partial shade with shelter from strong winds. Blechnum thrives in sheltered, humid conditions with filtered light.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Incorporate compost or leaf mould to improve moisture retention and soil structure.
Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth so roots have space to spread.
  2. Soil Preparation: Mix compost or organic matter into the excavated soil to enrich it and retain moisture.
  3. Planting: Position the plant so the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil, then backfill and firm gently.
  4. Watering After Planting: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and help Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ establish quickly.
Watering Requirements
  • Growing Season: Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth to support healthy fronds.
  • Dormant Season: Reduce watering slightly as growth slows, but do not allow the soil around Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ to dry out completely.
Feeding
  • Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser or organic feed in early spring to encourage healthy foliage growth.
  • Mid-Season: A light supplementary feed can help maintain vigour and strong frond development.
Pruning
  • Maintenance: Remove any old or damaged fronds to keep Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ looking tidy and healthy.
  • Seasonal Care: Trim away any tired foliage to encourage fresh new growth.
Mulching
  • Spring: Apply organic mulch such as leaf mould or compost around the base to retain moisture and improve soil quality.
  • Seasonal Care: Mulching also helps protect the crown and roots and supports the long-term health of the plant.
Supporting the Plant
  • Growth Habit: Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ forms a small trunk over time and does not require staking, but it benefits from a sheltered planting position.
