Description

Bunium ferulaceum is a hardy, herbaceous perennial reaching 60 cm in height and spreading to 30 cm. It produces elegant lacy white flowers on wiry stems above dark green, parsley-like foliage in June and July. Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and naturalistic planting schemes, it thrives in well-drained soil with full sun to light shade. This drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plant is loved by pollinators and adds delicate texture to garden displays.

PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
  • Spring: Plant once the soil has warmed slightly and is no longer water-logged; early April lets roots establish before the June bloom of Bunium ferulaceum.
  • Autumn: Alternatively, set dormant crowns in September to anchor before winter chill.
Site Selection
  • Sunlight: Bunium ferulaceum flourishes in full sun but accepts light afternoon shade, producing airy stems and plentiful lacy umbels.
  • Soil: Choose free-draining loam or sandy ground enriched with compost; prolonged winter wet can damage the fleshy taproot.
Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the hole: Dig twice the width of the root ball and just as deep.
  2. Amend the soil: Blend in organic matter plus a handful of horticultural grit for dependable drainage.
  3. Set the plant: Position Bunium ferulaceum so the crown sits level with the surface. Back-fill, firm gently, and water to settle.
Watering Requirements
  • Active growth: Water deeply during extended dry spells, then let the top few centimetres of soil dry. Once established, Bunium ferulaceum is moderately drought-tolerant yet rewards consistent moisture with stronger flowering.
  • Dormancy: Winter rainfall usually suffices; only irrigate container specimens if the compost begins to shrink from the sides.
Feeding
  • Each spring, scatter a balanced slow-release fertiliser around the base of Bunium ferulaceum to support lush parsley-like foliage and abundant white umbels.
Pruning
  • Deadhead spent stems in late July to keep clumps neat. After foliage yellows in autumn, cut Bunium ferulaceum back to ground level to spur fresh basal shoots next year.
Mulching
  • In early spring, mulching with 5 cm of composted bark or leaf-mould conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and buffers roots against temperature swings.
Supporting the Plant
  • Staking is seldom needed, but in exposed spots insert discreet twiggy supports early so the wiry stems of Bunium ferulaceum can weave through naturally.
Final Tips

With minimal care, Bunium ferulaceum forms tidy 60 cm mounds of fern-fine green topped by delicate white umbels each June and July. Pair it with ornamental grasses or pastel perennials for a fresh meadow vibe, and enjoy the hardy, pollinator-friendly display of Bunium ferulaceum year after year.
