PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time

Plant Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ in spring as the soil begins to warm, allowing the roots to establish before the flowering season begins. Early autumn is also suitable, giving the plant time to settle in before its next growth cycle.

Site Selection

Sunlight: Choose a location in full sun to encourage strong growth and intense flower colour. Eryngium thrives in bright, open positions where it receives consistent sunlight.

Soil: Provide well-drained soil, as this perennial dislikes waterlogged conditions. Adding grit or organic matter will help create ideal growing conditions for your Eryngium.

Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the Hole
Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. This gives the plant room to establish a healthy root system.
  2. Soil Preparation
Improve drainage by mixing grit or compost into the soil.
  3. Planting
Place the plant at the same level as it was in its pot. Backfill carefully and firm the soil around the root ball.
  4. Watering After Planting
Water thoroughly to settle the soil. Once established, Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ prefers drier conditions and should be watered sparingly.
Watering Requirements

Eryngium is tolerant of dry periods once established. Water occasionally during prolonged dry spells, allowing the soil to dry between sessions. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy, providing moisture only if the soil becomes very dry.

Feeding

Apply a light, balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy new growth. A mid-summer feed can extend flowering and help Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ maintain vigour throughout the season.

Pruning

Remove faded flowers to maintain a tidy appearance, or leave them for winter structure in the garden. At the end of the season, cut back stems to prepare Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ for the next year’s growth.

Mulching

Apply a thin layer of mulch in spring to suppress weeds and help stabilise soil moisture. Avoid placing mulch directly against the crown to prevent excess moisture around the base.

Final Tips

Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial that thrives in sunny, well-drained locations. With its compact form, brilliant blue flowers, and long summer display, this Eryngium is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking vibrant colour and structural interest in smaller spaces or modern planting schemes.
