PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
- Spring: Plant Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ when the soil starts to warm. This allows the roots to establish before the main flowering season.
- Autumn: Alternatively, early autumn planting helps the plant settle in before winter dormancy, supporting strong growth in the following season.
Site Selection
- Sunlight: Echinacea thrives in full sun. Ensure the location receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day to maximise flowering and plant health.
- Soil: Use well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Mix in compost or organic matter to improve soil fertility and drainage, giving Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ the best start.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice the width and equal depth of the root ball to give roots space to grow.
- Soil Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost or organic matter for nutrients and improved drainage.
- Planting: Position Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ in the hole, keeping the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill gently and firm the soil to remove air pockets.
- Watering After Planting: Water thoroughly to help settle the soil and establish roots.
Watering Requirements
- Growing Season: Once established, Echinacea is moderately drought-tolerant. Water during dry spells, allowing the soil to dry slightly between sessions. Avoid overwatering to prevent root issues.
- Dormant Season: Reduce watering significantly in the dormant season. Only water if the soil becomes excessively dry.
Feeding
- Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser to give your Echinacea a strong start to the growing season.
- Mid-Summer: Light feeding in mid-summer can support continued flowering and maintain plant vigour.
Pruning
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prolong flowering, encourage new blooms, and keep your Echinacea tidy.
- Autumn Pruning: Cut back to ground level after flowering ends to prepare the plant for winter dormancy and encourage healthier growth in the next season.
Mulching
- Spring: Apply organic mulch around the base of Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Supporting the Plant
- Staking: Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ has sturdy stems, so staking is usually unnecessary. In very windy areas, staking can prevent damage.
Final Tips
Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is a low-maintenance perennial that delivers a vibrant display of colour. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, follow this care guide, and enjoy continuous blooms that attract bees and butterflies from mid summer to autumn.

The Echinacea Cheyenne Spirit was delivered the day after I ordered it, in perfect condition, wrapped perfectly so that even a lone leaf hadn’t dropped off, and with several flower buds almost ready to flower. I haven’t yet been able to plant it but hope to do so tomorrow. After all the rain we’ve had over the weekend the soil should be perfect for planting. I’ve been very impressed with Proctors over the past two summers. They are by far the best plant nursery I’ve ever ordered from. I’m particularly impressed with the excellent way they pack everything so that the plants I’ve ordered so far from them (and there have been dozens) arrive in perfect condition. I highly recommend them for their healthy, beautifully grown plants that are delivered in perfect condition.
