PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
Spring: The ideal time to plant Agastache ‘Blackadder’ is in the spring when the soil starts to warm up. Planting at this time gives the plant plenty of time to establish a strong root system before the growing season is in full swing.
Autumn: If you prefer to plant in autumn, make sure to do so early enough to give your Agastache time to settle before the colder weather arrives. This will ensure the plant is well-established and ready for robust growth in the following season.
Site Selection
Sunlight: Agastache ‘Blackadder’ thrives in full sunlight. For best results, ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Proper sunlight exposure will promote abundant flowering and vigorous growth.
Soil: Agastache prefers well-drained soil. It is important to avoid areas where water logging can occur, as the plant does not tolerate soggy conditions. A slightly alkaline or neutral soil pH is ideal, but Agastache ‘Blackadder’ is fairly adaptable to different soil types as long as the drainage is good.
Planting Instructions
Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole that is twice the width and about the same depth as the root ball of the plant. This will allow the roots to spread out easily and anchor the plant effectively.
Soil Preparation: To improve soil quality, mix in compost or well-rotted organic matter, which will enhance fertility and drainage. Agastache ‘Blackadder’ thrives in soil that is slightly enriched with organic materials.
Planting: Place the root ball of your Agastache into the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole gently and firm the soil around the base of the plant to remove any air pockets.
Watering After Planting: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots and initiate the establishment process.
Watering Requirements
Growing Season: Agastache ‘Blackadder’ is fairly drought-tolerant once established. Water moderately during dry periods, ensuring the soil stays slightly moist but never waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so always let the soil dry out between waterings.
Dormant Season: As the plant enters dormancy in the cooler months, reduce watering significantly. Only water if the soil becomes excessively dry, as the plant does not need much moisture during this period.
Feeding
Spring: At the beginning of the growing season, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms on Agastache ‘Blackadder’.
Mid-Summer: A light feeding in mid-summer can promote continued flowering and keep the plant vigorous through the warmer months.
Pruning
Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming, regularly remove spent flowers from Agastache ‘Blackadder’. This will also help keep the plant looking neat and prevent seed production.
Autumn Pruning: After the final bloom, cut back your Agastache to ground level. This prepares the plant for winter dormancy and ensures a clean, tidy garden bed through the colder months.
Mulching
Spring: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant in spring. This will help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, providing an ideal growing environment.
Winter: Mulching in winter will protect the roots of Agastache ‘Blackadder’ from colder temperatures, ensuring the plant emerges healthy and strong in the following spring.
Supporting the Plant
Staking: Agastache ‘Blackadder’ generally has sturdy stems, but in windy areas, staking can help prevent damage or breakage. Place the stakes early in the season to avoid disturbing the roots later.
Agastache ‘Blackadder’ is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance perennial that brings vibrant colour and fragrance to any garden. Its ability to attract pollinators, combined with its tolerance to drought, makes it an excellent choice for both cottage and modern gardens. By following this planting guide and providing the right care, your Agastache ‘Blackadder’ will reward you with a stunning display of purple-blue flowers throughout the summer and into autumn. Whether used in borders, containers, or wildflower gardens, Agastache ‘Blackadder’ is a plant that truly shines.
