Description

Astrantia ‘Lola’ is a stunning perennial that features rich-pink pincushion flowers and deeply lobed, dark green leaves. This clump-forming plant thrives in a variety of garden settings and offers long-lasting beauty throughout the summer months. Follow this comprehensive guide to ensure your Astrantia flourishes in your garden year after year.

PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Time to Plant
  • Spring: The best time to plant Astrantia ‘Lola’ is in early spring, when the soil begins to warm. Planting in early spring gives the roots time to establish before the blooming season begins, allowing for healthy and robust growth.
  • Autumn: Alternatively, planting in early autumn is another excellent option. This gives your Astrantia the chance to settle in before the cooler months, encouraging strong growth for the following spring.
Choosing the Right Site
  • Sunlight: Astrantia thrives in full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth, choose a location that receives 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight each day. This will help encourage vibrant blooms while protecting the plant from harsh midday sun.
  • Soil: Ensure that the soil is well-drained, moist, and rich in organic matter. Astrantia ‘Lola’ prefers soil that is consistently moist but not waterlogged, so be sure the area drains well to avoid root rot. Adding compost to the soil can improve both fertility and drainage, promoting better growth.
Planting Instructions
  1. Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole that is roughly twice the width and the same depth as the root ball of the plant. This allows the roots plenty of space to spread and establish.
  2. Soil Preparation: Mix compost or organic matter into the soil to enrich it. This helps improve drainage and fertility, giving your Astrantia the nutrients it needs for healthy growth.
  3. Planting: Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it down to remove air pockets.
  4. Watering After Planting: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and help the roots establish. Ensure the soil drains well to avoid waterlogging, which can harm the roots.
Watering Requirements
  • Growing Season: Once established, Astrantia is moderately drought-tolerant, but it prefers consistently moist soil. Water during dry spells, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between watering sessions.
  • Dormant Season: In the dormant season, reduce watering significantly. Only water if the soil becomes very dry, as Astrantia ‘Lola’ requires less moisture during this time.
Feeding
  • Spring: In early spring, apply a balanced fertiliser to provide the necessary nutrients for healthy new growth. This will give your Astrantia ‘Lola’ a strong start to the growing season.
  • Mid-Summer: A light feeding in mid-summer can help sustain the flowering period and encourage continued blooming, keeping your Astrantia looking vibrant throughout the growing season.
Pruning
  • Deadheading: Regularly deadhead your Astrantia to remove spent flowers. This helps encourage new blooms and keeps the plant tidy. Deadheading can extend the blooming period and improve the overall appearance of your plant.
  • Autumn Pruning: After the last flowers have faded, cut the plant back to ground level in autumn. This prepares the plant for winter dormancy and promotes fresh growth in the following spring.
Mulching
  • Spring: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring. Mulch helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and regulates soil temperature, which benefits the plant as it starts to grow.
  • Winter: During the winter months, mulch around the base of your Astrantia to protect the roots from cold temperatures and prevent frost heaving, ensuring the plant’s survival through the winter.
Supporting the Plant
  • Staking: Astrantia ‘Lola’ generally has sturdy stems, but in windy or exposed locations, staking may be necessary to prevent damage. This will help support the plant’s upright growth and ensure it remains stable.
Final Tips

Astrantia ‘Lola’ is a low-maintenance perennial that provides stunning colour to your garden. By planting in well-drained, moist soil, providing consistent water during the growing season, and feeding with a balanced fertiliser, your Astrantia ‘Lola’ will thrive. Regular pruning, deadheading, and mulching will ensure healthy growth and vibrant blooms throughout the summer. Incorporate Astrantia into your garden design for a long-lasting and elegant floral display.

Lovely healthy plants. Good top growth producing some buds.

All the plants you sent me are a very good size and showing healthy growth. Have planted most of them out now; all have a pot full of healthy roots showing they have been grown on for several weeks before sending out. I like the fact that you sell a lot of your plants in 1l pots. At this size, they are robust and grow quickly when planted out but are also affordable. Too many nurseries only sell 9cm pots – often a bit too small and vulnerable to adverse conditions or pest attack when planted out – or 2l which can prove expensive. The pricing of your plants is very competitive compared to many other online suppliers.
The packaging of the plants was excellent. All arrived in good condition. The pots fitted exactly into the box so no need for lots of extra packaging which is always a pain to dispose of (even if it is recyclable). Also like your use of the pot canes so you can tell exactly how many plants are in the box and makes it much easier to get them out of the box without damaging them.
This was my first online purchase from Proctors. I’m very impressed and will definitely buy from you again.
