Description
Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ is a robust perennial producing upright spikes of semi-double, salmon-red flowers above finely cut green foliage. Growing to 70cm high with a spread of 35cm, it flowers from May to July. This hardy plant thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil and performs best in full sun. A favourite with pollinators, Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ is perfect for brightening borders and adding bold colour to summer displays.
PLANTING and AFTERCARE GUIDE
Best Planting Time
- Spring: Plant Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ in spring as the soil warms. This allows the roots to establish before the flowering season begins.
- Autumn: Planting in early autumn gives the crown time to settle before dormancy and ensures stronger growth the following year.
Site Selection
- Sunlight: Choose a site in full sun for Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ to achieve the best flower display. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day is recommended.
- Soil: Plant in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. Improve the planting area with compost or well-rotted manure to boost fertility and aid drainage.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equal in depth.
- Soil Preparation: Mix organic matter into the soil to enrich it and encourage healthy growth.
- Planting: Place Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ in the hole with the crown level to the soil surface. Backfill gently and firm in place.
- Watering After Planting: Water well to help the soil settle around the roots and encourage strong establishment.
Watering Requirements
- Growing Season: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season. Deep watering during dry spells will help Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ produce sturdy flower spikes.
- Dormant Season: Water sparingly in winter, only if the soil becomes very dry.
Feeding
- Spring: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and healthy flower production.
- Mid-Summer: Feed Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ again during flowering to extend the bloom period and strengthen plants.
Pruning
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to encourage additional blooms and keep the plant tidy.
- Autumn Pruning: After flowering, cut Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ back to ground level to prepare it for winter dormancy.
Mulching
- Spring: Apply a mulch of compost or bark chips around the base in spring to conserve moisture, improve soil, and suppress weeds.
- Winter: After cutting back, add a thicker mulch to protect the crown from cold conditions and ensure healthy regrowth.
Supporting the Plant
- Staking: The tall flower stems of Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ benefit from staking. Place supports early in the season to protect against wind damage and keep spikes upright.
Final Tips
Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ is a hardy, eye-catching perennial that adds striking salmon-red colour to borders. With fertile soil, consistent moisture, and reliable support, it will reward you with bold flower spikes through late spring and early summer. Pollinator-friendly and easy to grow, Delphinium ‘Red Lark’ is a standout addition to any perennial planting scheme.
